Lambs 2024
We are in the midst of spring in the heart of Pennsylvania, and it's a sight to behold. My flower garden, though informally planted, is a testament to resilience. Despite the rabbits' persistent visits and nibbling, some plants thrive in abundance. In their unruly nature, the phlox scatter seeds in all directions, seemingly growing anywhere they please. I've been adding more veronicas and delphiniums, hoping they will flourish too. If the rabbits continue their visits, our garden may face a challenge, but I remain optimistic.
The lambs and kids have been arriving for the last three weeks. Their bouncing for joy, running in any direction, and playing tag with other young ones bring the smelly barnyard alive. At this point, the females outnumber the males. Two white ewes presented us with large teats or lambs that needed prodding, directions, and enticements. All of them are in the fields with their mothers and enjoying the sunny weather.
All this newness and joy bring the shepherds to heightened awareness that one of the lambs or kids could be missing, trapped, lost, or hungry. I feel like a school teacher on a field trip counting children and making sure the correct number gets on the yellow bus for home.
